Getting Your Driver License

GETTING YOUR LICENSE

M.A. Driving School is approved by the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) to administer the Written Knowledge Test. *Effective May 18, 2017 M.A. Driving School NO LONGER  offers The Skills Drive Test as a service. You may take the Written Knowledge Test at our school and the Skills Drive Test at ANY Driver Training School that offers the Skills Drive Test. Passing these two tests is required in order to obtain a WA Driver License. After each test is passed, scores are submitted to the WA DOL. Knowledge Test scores will be electronically submitted by M.A. staff within 24 hours. Once this information is received by the DOL, applicants are able to visit any WA DOL location to obtain their official WA Driver License. To receive a license in the state of Washington, all applicants must be at least 16 years of age and present PROOF OF IDENTITY at the DOL & M.A. DRIVING SCHOOL LLC when testing for the Knowledge & Drive Skills Test.

All applicants under the age of 18 must complete and pass a Driver Education course before taking the Drive Test.

Step 1: Pre-apply Online

All applicants must pre-apply online with the DOL at https://secure.dol.wa.gov/home/ to obtain a Personal Identification Code (PIC#). This number is the same as: a WA I.D. Card #, Driver Permit # and WA Driver License #. If you have already obtained a WA ID, Driver Permit or Driver License you do not need to follow the pre-apply process.

You must provide this # when you arrive for testing. Driver Permits without a Photo will require 3 additional forms of identity. You must  provide legal proof of identity in order to do testing at M.A.  Because this can be complicated, please view this DOL link for specifics: PROOF OF IDENTITY. School ASB cards are NOT accepted as photo ID however, a school yearbook photo is acceptable.

Step 2: Pass the Written Knowledge Test

The Knowledge Test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions about traffic safety laws. Applicants must answer at least 32 questions correctly in order to pass the test.

Legal PROOF OF IDENTITY and your PIC#/Permit#/WA I.D.#/Driver license# is required at testing time.

The Knowledge Testing fee is $25 cash/check, $26.00 credit. This fee is good for two attempts at M.A. Payment is required at time of testing. Due to DOL proof of ID requirements, payment must be made in person.

The Knowledge Test is available in: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese and Spanish.

Q: Who can take the Knowledge Test?

A: You are eligible at 15 ½ or older even if you are not enrolled in a Driver Education course. Passing the Knowledge Test at 15 ½ or older allows the applicant to purchase an Instruction Permit. Applicants under 15 ½ who have completed and passed a Driver Education course are eligible to take the Knowledge Test immediately.

No appointment is needed for Knowledge Testing.
